As a homeschool mom and a big reader myself, I am always on the lookout for books that are engaging and ‘clean.’
I was recently introduced to Battlefield Earth, the classic science fiction title by L. Ron Hubbard. It is one of the sci-fi and fantasy icons like Dune, Enders Game, Starship Troopers, and Lord of the Rings. For its scope and triumphant ending, it has been compared to Harry Potter.
You may have heard of the action movie released a few years back. John Travolta produced this movie and was the arch-villain alien. Roger Christian directed it (he is known for being a director for Star Wars and Alien). They did a good job bringing the book to life. Still, I never consider a movie compares to the experience of reading or listening to the story.
I recommend this title for young readers if you have any teens. It is part of the Accelerated Reader program (over 60 points as it is so long!), and it is addictive.
Of course, it is not limited to young readers. Anyone who loved a great story should check it out.
Here is the short synopsis to give you the feel of the story:
Only 35,000 humans remain…
…and the aliens hunt them for sport.
Is this the end of the world or the dawn of a new one?
In the year A.D. 3000, Earth is a dystopian wasteland. The great cities stand crumbling as a brutal reminder of what we once were. When the Psychlos invaded, all the world’s armies mustered little resistance.
A young hero rises from the ashes and rallies the survivors in an all-out rebellion for freedom that explodes across the continents of Earth to the cosmic sprawl of the Psychlo empire.
The fate of the Galaxy lies on the Battlefield of Earth.
This is one of the finest examples of science fiction ever written, with nuance, sub-plots, and action all the way through—a masterpiece at over 1,000 pages.
You’ll love this epic work by L. Ron Hubbard because his vision of hard science fiction was ahead of its time.
“Battlefield Earth is one of my favorite works of science fiction ever. I’ve probably read it eight times or so. It’s always in my top five. It’s really brilliant.” —Hugh Howey
“Pulse-pounding mile-a-minute sci-fi action adventure that does not stop. It is a masterpiece of popular adventure science fiction.” —Brandon Sanderson
“Over 1,000 pages of thrills, spills, vicious aliens and noble humans. I found Battlefield Earth un-put-downable.” —Neil Gaiman

Audiobook
One of the best sci-fi audiobooks ever produced was created for Battlefield Earth. The unabridged audiobook full-cast production is excellent if you prefer to listen to the story.
It is like listening to a movie in your mind.

Educational
Homeschoolers and educators use Battlefield Earth to engage students while immersing them in a story that instills a love of reading. So important. The biggest difference between kids who love to read and those who don’t is accessibility to great stories. Who does not love a great story? Remember the first great book you read?
