The Allure of Countries that Pay You to Move There!

Financial Incentives and Opportunities

Moving to a new country often comes with financial challenges. However, several countries have devised innovative ways to attract newcomers. From relocation bonuses to tax incentives, these nations aim to make the transition smoother and financially rewarding.

What's on the Table?
These programs come in various forms:
  • Relocation Grants: Get a cash injection to help with settling in, like Italy's €2,000 grant for some towns.
  • Tax Breaks: Enjoy lower taxes on income or investment, like Spain's "Nomad Visa" benefits.
  • Startup Support: Launch your business with government assistance, as offered in Chile's Startup Visa program.
  • Long-Term Visas: Secure extended stays, ideal for retirees or high-net-worth individuals, as in Thailand's program.

Remember: These programs come with varying requirements and benefits. Meticulous research is crucial before diving in. Consider factors like eligibility criteria, residency obligations, and the overall cost of living in your chosen destination.
  • Eligibility: Do you meet the criteria (skills, investment, etc.)?
  • Residency Obligations: Are there minimum stay requirements?
  • Cost of Living: Will the financial benefits offset living expenses?

Moving abroad is a life-changing decision. Consider:
  • Cultural Fit: Are you comfortable with the language, customs, and way of life?
  • Personal Fulfillment: Does the country align with your overall goals and aspirations?

Navigating the Options - Where to Move?

The idea of getting paid to move to a new country sounds pretty sweet, right? Well, it's actually more common than you might think! Several countries offer incentives to attract new residents, from financial grants to tax breaks and even free land.

Every city, state, or country has its own agenda to entice in new residents, but some of the most common reasons include:
  • A low population – young people looking to start families are in particularly high demand in some parts of the world
  • A dwindling economy – a lack of local jobs means some parts of the world are importing entrepreneurs
  • ‘Brain drain’ – the loss of highly skilled workers has left some parts of the world without doctors, engineers and managers
  • Dilapidated properties – some towns have seen better days, and are incentivising people to move there to help fix up old home
  • Education – whether you’re a student looking to study, or a teacher in an in-demand field, you can get paid to move abroad

Whatever the reason(s), you are sure to find many countries which pay you to live there. Here are some of our top picks.

Countries that pay you to move:

Italy: Several small towns in Italy are offering relocation grants to people who are willing to move there and help revitalize the community. These towns are typically located in beautiful, rural areas and are looking for new residents to boost their populations and economies.  Some of these towns are:

Candela, Apulia:
  • Embrace the "Little Naples" lifestyle in this safe, picturesque town.
  • Cash incentives: Singles get €800 (or $864.52), couples €1,200 (or $1,296.78), and families up to €2,000 (or $2,161.30)!
  • Bonus: Enjoy tax credits and explore scenic valleys on horseback.
  • Catch: Formal residency required, minimum salary of €7,500 (or $8,104.87).

2. Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Abruzzo:
  • Live amidst cobbled streets in this charming mountain village.
  • Big bucks: Grants of up to €44,000 (or $47,548.60) for residents aged 18-40.
  • Open to: EU and non-EU residents with Italian residency cards.
  • Commitment: Start a business and stay for at least 5 years.

3. Calabria Region:
  • Revitalize charming villages across the "toe" of Italy.
  • Age limit: Must be under 40 to apply.
  • Financial perk: Receive €1,000-€800 (or $1,080.65 - $864.52) per month for 2-3 years (up to €28,000 (or $30,258.20)!).

Spain: Across Spain, charming villages once bustling with life now stand eerily silent, their homes and businesses echoing the whispers of a bygone era. But instead of succumbing to despair, many local councils are taking a proactive approach, offering enticing incentives to skilled individuals and families to breathe new life into these communities.

Ponga, Asturias: This picturesque town nestled in the mountains welcomes families with open arms, offering a generous €3,000 (or $3,241.95) relocation grant and an additional €3,000 for each child born there. Imagine raising your family amidst stunning scenery, knowing you're playing a vital role in the town's revival.

Rubiá, Galicia: Nestled in the Galician mountains, Rubiá offers a different kind of incentive. Here, the local council provides an extra €100-150 (or $108.06-$162.10) per month to supplement your income, making your move financially attractive and contributing to the town's economic revitalization.

Own a Village, Change a Destiny: If you're an entrepreneur with a vision, you can even purchase an entire Spanish village for a fraction of the price of a city townhouse! Imagine owning your own piece of history and transforming a forgotten community into a thriving hub, leaving your mark on the map.

But remember, these opportunities come with a responsibility: to not just enjoy the benefits, but to actively contribute to the town's renewal. Be prepared to invest your skills, energy, and passion to help these communities rediscover their vibrancy.

Portugal: Portugal's "Digital Nomad Visa" program is similar to Spain's, but it also offers a fast-track residency pathway for those who stay in Portugal for a certain period of time and meet certain income requirements.

Greece: Greece is offering a "Golden Visa" program to investors who purchase €250,000 (or $270,162.50) or more worth of real estate in the country. This visa allows investors and their families to live and work in Greece, and it can eventually lead to permanent residency or even citizenship.

Switzerland: Dreaming of breathtaking alpine views and fresh mountain air? If you're under 45 and embrace remote living, Albinen, Switzerland, has an offer you can't refuse: over £22,000 (or $27,792.60) to call their charming village home!  Adults receive a whopping 25,000 Swiss Francs (or $28,834.55)  and children get an additional 10,000 Swiss Francs (or $11,533.82), meaning a family of four could score a cool £61,000 (or $77,061.30)! You'll need to stay for at least 10 years and invest in a home worth at least 200,000 Swiss Francs (or $230,676.40). Leave before the decade's up, and you'll owe back the incentive. This offer is only for Swiss residents, meaning you must have lived in Switzerland for 12 years (or 5 years with a specific permit) or be married to a Swiss citizen with a pending citizenship application.

Canada: The Canadian government offers several programs to attract skilled workers and entrepreneurs to immigrate to Canada. These programs offer permanent residency and a path to citizenship.

Struggling with student debt after graduation? Consider a fresh start in beautiful Saskatchewan, Canada! This welcoming province offers more than breathtaking landscapes and a friendly atmosphere – it also has a generous Graduate Retention Program (GRP) waiting for you. Here's why Saskatchewan could be your dream move:
  • Up to CA$20,000 (or $14,841.75) in tax rebates: Reduce your student debt with rebates spread over 7 years, reaching up to CA$4,000 (or $2,968.35) per year in the later years.
  • Eligibility is broad: Completed at least 6 months of post-secondary education in an approved institution (including many overseas universities)? You're good to go!
  • Boost your career: Saskatchewan is booming with industry opportunities and a supportive business climate, perfect for launching your career.
  • Affordable living: Enjoy a lower cost of living compared to major cities, leaving you more room to breathe and save.

The program offers up to $50,000 in funding, as well as a one-year visa. If you plan to move your business to Denmark or start a new one there, you’ll have instant access to their health and welfare systems. Denmark’s entire system is one of the most generous in the entire world, and not only that, but you’d have access to one of the largest markets – the European Union.

Estonia: Estonia’s government offers the e-Residency program, which provides funding and support to entrepreneurs who want to start businesses there. The program offers up to $50,000 in funding and a one-year visa.

Iceland: Iceland’s government offers the Start-Up Iceland program, which provides funding and support to entrepreneurs who want to start businesses there. The program offers up to $50,000 in funding, as well as a one-year.

Mauritius: Mauritius may not be the isolated and hidden heaven that it used to be in decades prior, and while most of its beaches may have been explored, its potential hasn’t been. That’s why the government of Mauritius has started a unique program that offers incentives to startups that might be one of the most experimental programs in the world. In order for your startup to be eligible, you have to prove to a committee that your idea is unique, but also viable and has a good chance to grow. You can apply in different fields, such as technology, business models, finance, innovations, and many more, and depending on how well you present your idea, if you get approved, you’ll get a modest allowance of 20.000 Mauritian Rupees (or $453.53). That might not be a lot of money, but relative to the expenses of Mauritius, it will be more than most startups need.

Japan: Japan’s government offers a program called the Regional Revitalization Program, which provides funding and support to people who want to move to rural areas of the country. The program offers up to $10,000 in funding, as well as a one-year visa.

Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand: These three countries offer very similar incentives, so they’re grouped together. They offer programs aimed at people from Europe and the United States, and the programs are about teaching English and other courses. These countries have fully developed programs running for years, so applications are streamlined, and the process is reasonably quick. There are a few minute details that are different between these countries – Korea pays better generally, while Vietnam and Thailand are cheaper to live.

U.S. States that pay you to move there:

Oklahoma:  By becoming a remote worker in Oklahoma’s second city, Tulsa, you could receive a grant of up to US$10,000. Tulsa Remote is on the hunt for digital nomads who are eligible to bring their remote work to the city. In return, they offer free desk space, networking events and – most importantly – $10,000 either as a cash lump sum to put towards a new home or as a monthly stipend to help you while you’re getting set up.

Alaska: While not a country, the state of Alaska offers the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend, which pays out a portion of the state's oil wealth to all residents each year. The amount of the dividend varies depending on oil prices, but it can be several thousand dollars per person.

Vermont: The state of Vermont offers the Remote Worker Grant program, which provides grants of up to $10,000 to remote workers who move to the state. The program is designed to attract young professionals and families to help revitalize rural communities.

Minnesota: Minnesota is offering the 218 Relocate package to prospective residents. It includes up to US$2,500 to cover moving expenses, a free co-working space and access to the Community Concierge Program, to help you get set up and grow your business. It is one of the states that pay you to move there. Apparently, Bemidji has some of the fastest internet speeds in America, making it an ideal place to run a remote business from.

Kansas: Topeka (the capital city of Kansas) is seeking to attract more talented young professionals to the area with a grant of up to US$15,000! This handsome lump-sup is available for on-site employees whose employers are willing to participate in the “Choose Topeka” relocation incentive. Alternatively, remote workers could receive over US$5,000 USD. Applying for the incentive is straightforward – it’s all done via an online form, and some of the key requirements include:
  • confirming it will be your main residence with
  • proof of your new lease or property purchase
  • you have approval from your employer (if required)

Iowa: As part of their ‘Get to Know Newton’ scheme, you could receive up to US$10,000 to put toward the cost of building your new home. Better still, if the value of your home will be under US$100,000, you’ll be eligible for a tax abatement. And, you’ll also receive a coupon book as part of your welcome pack, offering up to US$2,500 worth of discounts at local shops and restaurants. There are, of course, many steps involved. You’ll need to find your plot, have your plans approved by the city council, then receive a Certificate of Occupancy once the project is finished. But if you can handle all that, you could have your new home in Newtown, and for US$10,000 cheaper!

TennesseeBy moving to one of Chattanooga’s up-and-coming neighbourhoods, the city’s ‘GeekMove’ program will help to offset the initial costs of your new home by offering a second forgivable mortgage, thereby reducing your first mortgage payments. There are only 10 of these highly-coveted packages available, and they tend to go quickly – plus, they are only available for computer programmers who are currently based at least 50 miles away from the city, and you can bet there are some pretty substantial hurdles to overcome.

It's important to note that there are often strings attached to these incentives. For example, some programs may require you to live in a specific location for a certain period of time, or they may only be available to people with certain skills or qualifications. However, if you're open to the idea of moving abroad and you're willing to do some research, you may be able to find a program that's a good fit for you.

Here are some additional things to consider when thinking about moving to a new country:
  • The cost of living: Make sure you can afford to live in the country you're considering, even if you're getting some financial assistance.
  • The language: It's always a good idea to learn at least some of the local language before you move, even if it's not required.
  • The culture: Do your research to make sure you're comfortable with the culture of the country you're considering.
  • The visa requirements: Make sure you meet all of the visa requirements for the country you want to move to.

If you're thinking about making a move, these are just a few of the countries that are offering incentives to attract new residents. With a little research, you may be able to find the perfect place to call home.
