Sophia absolutely loves to watch movies. She`s the kind of toddler that once she finds a new movie she watches it over and over and over again. Hence why she has her own computer just so she can watch her movies! Well now it`s time to throw in a new dvd to her mix, The Real Story of Puss `N Boots!
This movie is about how a young farmers son inherits a strange talking cat with magical boots. With his cunning wit, Puss helps him win the heart of the Princess while battling devious suitors that are after the throne. This movie is the original French tale and should not be compared to the Shrek version. The animation is a bit unnatural, but the story line is engaging and the music is quite good with catchy tunes from Carmen`s Bizet, La Donna e Mobile, and other popular opera classiques.
So what are my thoughts on the film? The movie is a little over an hour long, about the perfect time frame to occupy a toddlers attention span. It is a story of a man who inherits a cat who talks and wears red leather boots that he makes for him, his dad`s dying request. After falling for the princess, Puss takes matters into his own hands and helps him win over her heart. It is a very strange story with very strange characters. Facial expression animation is minimal, and there are numerous "technical" faults - close-up texturing glitches, inconsistent shadowing, etc. It`s certainly not up to par with Dream-works, Pixar, Blue Sky, etc. There are a few nice scenes sprinkled in, but most of it is pretty bland.
The musical numbers in this movie are very good. Sophia is 3 years old and really enjoyed the music. She is a big music lover. She also seemed to enjoy the film. While I am a bit disappointed that the animation was done with older technology (or so it appears) I do think that there was a good story line, at least good enough to keep the attention of a young child. Would I recommend the movie for adults? No, but for younger kids, Yes.
The bottom line is if you like foreign `art` films, then perhaps this movie will appeal to you. If your tastes are more mundane, then this is likely to be far too weird for you to watch.
