As many of you know Sophia has been homeschooled this year for her kindergarten year. I always tell you how she does a variety of things to learn: computer games and software, worksheets, books, arts and crafts, movies, etc. Basically, we don`t do just one form of learning; we do a variety of thing. Every child learns differently so I feel it`s important to teach a variety of ways to learn so 1) she can see what way works best for her and 2) to keep things more fun and interesting - at least as much as possible. Well with Sophia getting ready to be in the first grade she learned how to do basic reading and loves to show off. Of course in order to be able to read you need to know words. She has learned and picked up on quite a few words this year, but one way she really picks up on things is through watching videos. We recently got a new video in: Rock `N Learn Sight Words DVD Level 1. Plus they`re going to give one of my readers a chance to win the same DVD as well! Sight words are the most frequently used words in children`s literature, and this DVD helps students read them automatically. As a supplement to phonics-based strategies, Rock `N Learn Sight Words boosts reading and spelling skills. Children learn over 60 sight words through engaging characters, entertaining songs, and fun practice. Words are presented in context to help build reading comprehension. Includes all pre-primer Dolch words, the top 20 from Fry`s, and more. A bonus section allows learners to practice the words in isolation, focusing on word shapes as well as spelling each word.
This sight words DVD is appropriate for pre-k aged children and older and is approximately 50 minutes long. Sophia just turned 6 in January and when I gave her the DVD to watch she immediately put it on and began watching it. She instantly fell in love. Sophia loves to learn, but her problem is the second it gets challenging she wants to quit because she doesn`t like a challenge. Believe me, trying to get her to pay attention during those times is a challenge in itself! Well, this movie kept her attention and she actually enjoyed it. The best part about it is while she is enjoying the movie, she is also learning and picking up on new words without feeling like it`s being shoved down her throat forcing her to learn. Does that make any sense? Needless to say, I`m pretty thrilled with the DVD as a parent and Sophia is excited to have a new movie. It works out for the whole family. I definitely recommend checking out Rock `N Learn if you have young children - whether homeschooling or just wanting to supplement at home learning and school learning, Rock `N Learn is a great resource!
