Paraffin wax is commonly used in candles, but soy candles
are another option on the market. While soy candles look and smell similar to their paraffin counterparts, they offer distinct advantages. Not all soy candles are created the same way, however. While some limit unnecessary chemicals, others include additives or are blended with paraffin wax. Read the label or ask the manufacturer if you are unsure of the ingredients in the candle.
WHAT IS SOY WAX?
Soy wax candles are made from soy wax. Soy wax is a vegetable wax derived from soybean oil. After soybeans are harvested they are cleaned, dehulled, cracked, and rolled into flecks. Oil is then extracted from these flecks and hydrogenated. In the process, unsaturated fatty acids present in the oil are saturated, thereby dramatically altering the oil`s melting point. It then solidifies at room temperature.
HISTORY OF SOY WAX
Interestingly, soy wax was invented by a group of college students in 1996 at Purdue University. The students had to develop a birthday candle using a renewable resource. They chose to use soybean oil. The students figured out how to solidify soy bean oil and won first place in a competition, sponsored by the Indiana Soybean Development Council and Purdue`s Department of Agronomy.
BENEFITS OF SOY WAX
- Soy wax is derived from a vegetables, (soy beans), while it`s counter partner, paraffin wax is derived from petroleum (a refined a gasoline product).
- Soy wax is a natural, renewable resource.
- Soy wax is biodegradable and cleans up with plain old soap and water.
- Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax and because of this, soy candles will burn slower or longer than paraffin candles.
- Soy wax burns with zero petro soot, creating petro soot free candles. Paraffin candles burn with petro-soot.
Soy candles are made from soybeans, a natural, renewable source grown in many regions by local farmers. Paraffin candles are made from petroleum, which is a nonrenewable source that contains carcinogenic substances. These substances may be released into the air while burning, according to The Daily Green. Using candles made from soy supports local agriculture and farmers, allowing them to make money and grow their operations.
A candle made from soy wax burns cleaner with little soot released as the candle burns. Paraffin candles often create a significant amount of black soot that collects on the jar, as well as on your walls and other surfaces of the home. The soy candle may accumulate some black soot on the jar, but the amount is much less than paraffin candles. Soy candles are also non-toxic so they won`t release toxins into the air as they burn.
Soy candles typically last longer than a paraffin candle of the same size, according to Planet Green. The reason behind the longevity of soy candles is the slower burning time and cooler burning temperature of the soybean-based wax. You may pay more for a soy candle initially, but the longer-lasting burn means you won`t have to buy new candles as often. Soy wax is also biodegradable, making it an investment that benefits the environment.
A soy candle works well for holding onto the scent from essential oils, which are often used to scent candles. Because they burn more slowly, the scent is gradually released; there won`t be an immediate wave of strong scent. This creates a more pleasant atmosphere for most people. The natural wax also holds onto color well, which makes it look more attractive
I absolutely love candles! I`m the type who loves the candle that fills the room with the scent. I also love candles that DON`T leave soot on my ceiling from using. That`s why I decided to check out the Old Factory Candle Gift Set
. I went with Fall Harvest set which comes with Pumpkin Spice, Cranberry, and Autumn Leaves scents. Each set comes with three 2oz jars. The cars have a screw on lid and adorable stickered labels. Because these are soy candles, it burns clean and there`s no soot rising from the flame. It took about 10-15 minutes of burning before I could smell the candles, but once they got going they smelled really great. Each candle has it`s own unique scent and smells good without being overpowering. I love these candles and think they would make great gifts or stocking stuffers; especially with the upcoming holidays.
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
