The last local review was of the Audubon Zoo. This time is something a bit different. We`re headed to the NOLA Tropical Winery in the Riverwalk! Again, this was a non-sponsored review and a review of my own doing. All expenses came from out of pocket. Also, please bare in mind that all photos used belong to NOLA Tropical Winery as I didn`t pull my camera out for this event.
Coming across this place was by pure accident. We were walking through the Riverwalk (a shopping mall/area along the Mississippi River in the French Quarter area) and as we were walking by someone was calling out for a FREE wine tasting. Now you know I couldn`t pass up free! So we entered into the small little shop. Yes, the space was small, but decent. It wasn`t cluttered or crowded so that was a plus.
NOLA Tropical Winery, a unique retail store and wine bar that offers non-traditional, unique award winning wines.
All of our tropical wines are 100% all-natural fruit wines made without grapes or wooden barrels to produce high quality, award-winning wines free of tannic acids.  Fruit wines are an old Deep South tradition we are proud to bring back to the capital of food and fun, New Orleans.  Our exclusive line of nearly 40 fine wines range from totally dry to sweet, and run the gamut from dry reds and whites to a host of semi-sweets, dessert wines, specialty wines, port, sherry, and the First Wine of the South, muscadine.
Crafted at our winery in central Florida, our wines are fine works of the vintner`s art created from hand-selected berries, citrus, and tropical fruits.  Awarded multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals in international wine competitions, our wines are unequaled in taste, clarity, bouquet, and versatility.
Our selection of wines include:
  • Citrus Wines: Orange, Tangerine, Tangelo, Pink Grapefruit, Key Lime Peach
  • Berry Wines: Muscadine, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cranberry, Strawberry, Raspberry, Cherry
  • Tropical Fruit Wines: Watermelon, Mango, Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Kiwi, Banana, Guava
  • Blended Wines: Coco Polada-An Orange, Pineapple, & Coconut Wine, and Hurricane Class 5 Florida White Sangria
We also offer a line of specialty & dessert wines, including:
  • Hot Sun - a Southern tomato & hot pepper wine
  • Orange Blossom Honey Wine - mead`s sophisticated sister
  • 40 Karat - a carrot wine in the chardonnay/sauvignon blanc style
  • Cocoa Beach - an orange wine fermented with chocolate
  • Midnight Sun - an orange wine aged with roasted coffee beans
  • Black & Blue Port - a blackberry & blueberry port fortified to 18% alcohol with neutral muscadine spirits
  • Raspberry Chocolate Port - a port made from raspberries, infused with chocolate, and fortified to 18% alcohol with neutral muscadine spirits
The staff (which consisted off two people from what I saw) was VERY friendly and knew their wine! I`m new with the whole wine experience thing so I was ready to taste a few things to get a general idea of what I may or may not like. They were patient and were ready to serve each tasting to me as I chose a drink from their wine menu.
I decided to try a few drinks (not the whole shop I promise!) and went with: Festiberry, Honey Wine, Black & Blue Port and Sparkling Blue Berry Blue. I think there was one or two other wines I tried but I`m not 100% sure which ones! Basically I learned I don`t like dry wines! I`m into a fruitier sort of taste. The Honey Wine was just awesome! Loved it! If I had hit pay day that day I would have probably got me a bottle to take home to be quite honest.
On the way out we decided to get a Frozen Wine Smoothie Pina Colada. It was basically a frozen drink using wine. It was the BEST Pina-Coloda I`ve ever had too might I add! Typically I`m not the biggest fan on Pina Colada`s, although I will drink them. So I was quite happy with that as well!
Overall, I had a great time! This was my first wine tasting ever, it happened to be free, the wine was great and staff was wonderful! We were treated with respect which is number one in my book for great customer service, which tends to not happen so much for me since I look like I`m in my teen years rather than a young adult in my 20`s. It`s an experience I`m looking forward to again in the future. I would recommend leaving the kids at home for a more peaceful time as they may get antsy and this isn`t a very much kid-friendly place in the fact they didn`t provide any "virgin" drinks that I saw. Of course, they are more than welcome to step in, it just may be a bit boring on their end. So keep this in mind. Also, their wine bottle prices are rather reasonable as well. So if you happen to be around the Riverwalk, stop in and say hi and try some wine!

Seems like a great experience. Will have to check it out next time I'm in New Orleans.
