Nasal congestion or "stuffy nose" is a Partial blockage of the nasal passage caused by swelling of the mucous membrane that lines the nose. It is the result of inflammation of the nasal passages or sinus cavities. Nasal congestion is sometimes accompanied by the accumulation of thick nasal mucus. Nasal congestion is a symptom of the common cold and of hay fever. It may also be caused by certain drugs. The swelling may become persistent in disorders such as chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps.
Steam inhalation can help to loosen the mucus. This involves placing the head over a basin of hot water, possibly with the addition of aromatic oils such as lemon or eucalyptus, and inhaling the steam for several minutes. Citrus oils such as lemon, lime, grapefruit, and orange have properties to help break down the mucus.
Topical Use:
Apply Eucalyptus around the nostrils for more severe congestion. Some find that 1 or 2 drops of Eucalyptus topically applied right over the sinus areas and/or the outside of the nostrils will help break up congestion. Dilute the oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil if it is too strong. Place citrus oils in a diffuser to help put moisture in the air and break up the mucus as you breathe. Place some drops of suggested oils in a cup and inhale from the cup.
