Cleaning is a chore that most of us do not enjoy. But add in those stinky, harsh conventional cleaners and it becomes downright awful. Fortunately, there are natural ways to clean and even kill mold in your home. Mold can lead to serious issues in sensitive people including respiratory problems, cough, skin rashes, and asthma attacks. Plus, it makes your house look dirty.

Many people turn to bleach to kill mold, but bleach is often worse for your respiratory system. In addition, bleach has shown to only kill mold, but not prevent it. Certain Essential Oils are incredible at fighting and preventing mold. These oils help destroy bacteria and mildew and continue to aid in stopping new growth.

*One important thing to note is that the only way to permanently remove mold from drywall is to remove the piece and replace it with a new one.

Clove Essential Oil

Have you ever heard of the ORAC Scale? The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity system was developed by the USDA and Tufts University to measure antioxidant ratings. Antioxidants are incredibly helpful in the world we live in because they can stop the damage caused by free radicals in our environment. Clove Essential Oil is the highest-scoring oil on this scale. Hitting 1,078,700, this oil is a powerhouse antioxidant! This means that Clove is great for tackling bacteria and mold. It has shown in studies that Clove can kill mold spores. When used correctly, you can eliminate mold from the area and help keep it from coming back.

Oregano Essential Oil

You know that yummy spice that reminds you of your favorite pizza? Well, it turns out that Oregano, as an Essential Oil, is an amazing oil for killing fungus and bacteria. In fact, Oregano Essential Oil is often used as a natural antibiotic. One component of Oregano oil, Carvacrol has recently been used to naturally elongate the shelf life of fresh food because it prevents the growth of microorganisms. When used in a cleanser, it can definitely be helpful in getting rid of mold and fungi.

Cinnamon Essential Oil

This sweet and spicy scent might remind you of the holidays or your favorite cookies, but this oil isn’t so innocent. It has a reputation for killing… mold that is. In one study, Cinnamon Essential Oil proved to be the best oil for inhibiting the growth of yeast spores, proving that fungi can be controlled with Essential Oils. A separate study showed that Cinnamon oil stopped the growth of bacteria on food for almost 60 days. This just proves that this tough oil can be used in prevention of new mold growth when used to clean the spores in your home.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

As you probably already know, Tea Tree Oil is a great fungus fighter. You already use it on your skin, so why not use it to clean up your house? This oil is also good for removing odors or mildew, which can be handy when you have moldy fabrics. Simply adding about 15 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil to a 2 oz spray bottle filled with water, can improve the scent of those fabrics when sprayed on it. Harnessing the power of Tea Tree in your cleaning supplies will aid in ridding fungus, bacteria, and odors from your home.

Mold Busting Scrub

  • 1 Glass Jar
  • 1 Cup Baking Soda
  • 4 Drops Clove Essential Oil
  • 4 Drops Cinnamon Essential Oil
  • Soapy Water and a Sponge

Put the Baking Soda into the glass jar and mix in the Essential Oils; they will not dissolve all the way and that is okay. Let the oils soak in for about 10-20 minutes. Sprinkle the mix onto the moldy surface and let sit for 5 minutes. Soak your sponge in the warm soapy water and scrub the surface using as much elbow grease as you’ve got to get rid of that mold. Re-wet sponge as needed, then rinse the area with warm water.
