Prescription drugs are an increasing cost that is affecting many people`s budget, and during these tough economic times, looking for ways to reduce these costs is on everyone`s mind. In some cases, people have to make difficult choices, choosing one prescription over another, or deciding whether to get their prescription or food... and certain drugs that are very expensive are out of reach entirely due to not being covered by insurance. Learning how to save on these medications is essential to your pocketbook. Below are 3 ways to save.

Independent Pharmacies

Although discount generic drug programs are not always offered in neighborhood independent pharmacies like the bigger competitors, some are willing to match prices of these bigger stores. It is worthwhile to ask, particularly if you are on the medication long term, or if you prefer shopping at your neighborhood pharmacy.

In a recent survey from a subscriber of Consumer Reports, independent pharmacies scored the best for providing quicker service, making less mistakes, and having prescriptions ready on time. Due to pharmacist accessibility and personal service, readers stated they liked the mom and pop drugstores.

No matter which pharmacy you choose, it is best to stick with one place to fill all your medications rather than hopping around from place to place shopping for the best deal on each prescription. Apart from being convenient, sticking with one pharmacy allows you to have all prescriptions tracked to ensure drug interaction and additional safety issues.

Discount Programs

Check into government and drug manufacturer programs. Certain drug makers offer programs and discount cards for free or reduced-cost brand name medications. There are various websites that offer information about these programs. Also, drug discount programs are offered by government agencies, and senior assistance plans are offered by most states.

Consider Generics

It is not required that you take name brand medications only; in some cases, generic drugs are just as good. Studies have found that patients with heart disease in most cases do just as well using generic medication as they do with the name brand type.

Check for $4.00 Generics. Just recently, Sam`s club, Wal-Mart and Target made an announcement that generic medication is now being offered in their store for $4.00 both for new fills and refills. Other pharmacies like Walgreens are beginning to consider this price. Not all generic prescription drugs are available through these programs. Some seem to think that this pricing program is a tactic known as "bait and switch" since a lot of the drugs are rarely used and are older generics. For instance, Wal-Mart is hopeful that people who are unable to get their medicine for the $4.00 might just purchase it anyway at the higher price rather than go shopping around at a different pharmacy.

If your prescription medications are becoming too costly for your budget, you might be tempted to not fill them. However, before you risk your well-being and health with this approach, consider the above steps first which could help to get you that medication at a lower cost.
