Every year on August 26 we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, a holiday that commemorates the 1920 adoption of the 19^th Amendment which gave U.S. women the right to vote. This monumental achievement only came about because of the tireless efforts of passionate, fearless women—something that still inspires us a century later, and helps drive our mission to celebrate women’s power to make a beautiful and positive impact in the world.  

 

We started empowering women early on. In 1886 (34 years before women earned the right to vote!), Avon’s founder, David H. McConnell, provided an opportunity for women to earn money on their own terms. He recognized women’s passion for beauty and innate networking skills, and felt inspired to recruit women as Sales Representatives.

 

Avon was far ahead of its time in empowering women to run their own businesses:

 

95 years before the first woman was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

77 years before the first woman traveled into space.

76 years before the first woman took the reins of a Fortune 500 company.

34 years before women in the U.S. had the right to vote.

17 years before the first woman won the Nobel Prize.

 

We’re extremely proud of our legacy of empowering women, and we’re excited to keep building on it by supporting our thriving community of Representatives.
