How many of y`all like candy? I know I do! Recently I teamed up with Glee Gum to check out one of their make your own gummies kits. Plust, they`re kind enough to offer a kit up for one of my awesome readers!
Some of you may not remember, but back in February 2010 I reviewed the Make your own gum kit which was pretty awesome and simple to do. Well this kit was a bit different. Obviously gum and gummies are two different things, but the main thing that stood out in difference was the ease of making the product and the kid friendliness of it. While I found the gum kit easier to make, I also found that kids would be able to easily be involved in the making. The gummies kit, not so much so.
I love the whole experience of mixing and knowing how the gummie making process works, but I also found Sophia couldn`t be too involved with this project. In fact, I let my husband-to-be work on this one and give his feedback. One of the steps (in fact the first step) says to put the dried seaweed in a bowl of water to soak. This part a child can do and may enjoy watching the seaweed grow.
The next step is to choose the shapes you want to use to make your molds. Unfortunately we were limited to what we could use and would have preferred to have some sample shapes at the least to try out with our project. Instead we ended up using a finger, attempt to make our own worm, and a mold of his badge.
When you mix the mixture of ingredients together to pour in the mold, it gets a bit difficult and trying to keep the mold in tact while pouring we also found difficult. So the chances of allowing a younger child to help stir the bowl at least most likely wouldn`t work well, at least in our case that was the issue. Once the mixture is poured you let it sit in the refrigerator for roughly 20 minutes to thicken and get that gummie look and feel to it. Once done, add the sour mix and that`s it.
When all is done, the gummy itself I didn`t find too bad. Future hubby didn`t care for it though. We found the sour mix is what gives the gummy the flavor. I liked that rather than it being as thick as a gummy work, it was still soft. Maybe we needed to give it longer to set for a thicker mixture, but personally I liked it and I find it`s easier for children to eat as well.
So what`s my overall opinion? I think it`s a pretty interesting process and tastes great. Not recommended if you`re looking for a project with younger children though. Maybe 10 years and up would be my personal recommendation, although the box does say 8 and up. Just depends on the child as always. I like that it is all natural so it does make for a bit of a healthier tasty treat rather than something loaded with sugars. It`s also made on either stove top or in a microwave. So you`re not forced to use the stove if you dread them! Basically, an interesting experience for older children and adults, but don`t expect a youngster to be able to help in the mixing process!
