I am by no means a fitness or health freak or expert to say it bluntly. I do like to stay in shape though and for some reason if I have something tracking my moves such as how many steps I took and how much activity I’m doing and what’s doing for my body and such, I’m more prone to do more just to watch those number go up. Crazy right? I know being 8 months pregnant I probably don’t take 10,000 steps per day anymore as recommended, but pre-pregnancy I would wear a pedometer from time to time and take a long walking route just accumulate extra steps – just an example of what I mean. Well now there’s a hot new item out for those of you who like to stay and shape and keep a tracker on yourself called the Misfit Shine Elegant Wearable Tracker.

With the Misfit Shine you can keep track of your activity level, calories burned, how well you sleep and more with this Misfit Shine SH0AZ activity monitor that features a halo of 12 LED lights, matte metallic treatment and a jewelry-like appearance for chic style while you work out. I find that the shine is unique in it’s appearance and quite high tech. Your typical pedometer you can shake and it’s count it as a step or two taken which obviously would throw off your steps if you were counting them. The Shine is quite a bite more accurate as far as detecting your activity level and calories burned count. What I love is that it can tell you how well you’re sleeping as well. All you have to do is wear it to bed and triple tap the device before you go to sleep and do the same thing in the morning.
The Shine is made of aerospace grade aluminum, which fits right in with the fact that it looks like a miniature flying saucer right down to the ring of lights around the edge. 1,560 laser-drilled holes allow light to shine through while keeping water out. The Shine is water-resistant for swimming and showering, but isn’t waterproof. So don’t go diving in the ocean wearing it! Also, The tracker runs on a standard CR2032 coin cell battery which lasts about 4 months so no need of having to stress about charging it every day or it running out of a charge from daily use.
Opening the Shine is easy with the included tool. Just put the little wedge blade in the slot on the device and pop it open. I’m usually terrible with such things and surprisingly I was able to do it without any problems and was very simple. The battery fits in the lid and is held there with a magnet. Snap the two pieces back together and you’re ready to get active. I love how it even directs you as to which end of the battery to insert to make the process that much easier!
To use the Shine you can put the Shine in your pocket or attach it to a holder, such as the sports wristband, which features a rubber loop that fits in the groove around the edge of the tracker. The wristband allows you to comfortably wear your Misfit Shine device on your wrist during a variety of sports and fitness activities. The high-quality material provides durability.
The Shine uses a high precision 3-axis accelerometer to track your activities including: walking, running, sleeping, swimming and cycling. To set your daily goal, you’ll need to use the iOS application. I was pretty disappointed though because I have a Samsung Note 2, which is an Android device and the Shine only has an app for iPhone. At one point they did have an android app, but they pulled it from the android market because they wanted to appeal more to their IOS customers. So, of course, knowing all the information I already stated, as exciting as it is, is pretty useless to me without an iPhone or iPad. Moving on though…
Goals are based on points, with the default set to 1000. Basically, for every 100 steps you walk, you earn 10 points, so the default goal is 10,000 steps per day. You can change this to be as low as 100 points which would be 10 minutes of walking, 5 minutes of running or 5 minutes of swimming. The highest goal that can be set is 9900 points, which would require you to walk 16.5 hours, run 5.5 hours or swim for 7.5 hours.
To sync your info from the Shine to the app, you don’t have to use Bluetooth, WiFi, a cable or press any buttons. All you do is place the tracker on the screen and wait a few seconds till it’s done transferring the data. It couldn’t be easier.
The app allows you to view the stats in a simple format. By default, it shows you your points earned for the day, which translates to steps when you tap the circle. The app also shows your burned calories and distance walked. When you swipe up on the screen you’re presented with a graph that displays your active times throughout the day. Tiles can be tapped to drill down to even more info about the active times.
Overall my opinion of the Misfit Shine is that it’s an awesome device with cool features, but the fact that they limit the app access to those only with access to an iPhone or iPad type product is a huge let down and disappointment. From what I noticed I’m not even able to keep track using my computer so it’s either you use it with the iPhone or you can’t use it at all. Would I recommend this product? Most definitely as long as you have an iPhone or iPad, but if you’re an android user such as myself, stay away because you won’t be able to use it.
